Workers, Contractors take social media route to recover 1-bn-rupee dues from Reliance Defence

PIPAVAV-RAJULA | RAJKOT – More than 3,000 contractual workers and 200 plus contractors from Rajula-Pipavav (in Amreli District of Gujarat State) have taken a very novel route of social media and digital platform to protest for recovery of 1 billion (90 crore) rupees due from Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd (formerly Pipavav Defence Engineering Offshore Company Ltd), the recovery amount of 1 billion rupees is due since last three years, the press release from the workers, contractors union said.

The protestors after submitting official letter of memorandum to the Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in presence of the Member of Legislative Assembly from Rajula constituency Hirabhai Solanki, stagging peaceful dharnas outside company premises for two days giving ultimatum to the present day Anil Dhirubhai Ambani owned company management to resolve the matter, will now take the social and digital media route, bringing awareness about their protest programme, globally.

“We had already intimated our action to the Chief Minister and the company management in writing, from today we have initiated our protest digitally and on social media platforms, vide our protest programme, we have today shot 58,000 text messages (SMS) to several associated with stock market fraternity, about our issue,” Pravin Ram, Regional President of Jan Adhikar Manch and leader of the protestors told DATELINE GUJARAT.

Payments of workers are due since last three years, neither the old Nikhil Gandhi owned company management nor the present day new Anil Dhirubhai Ambani owned company management is resolving the matter and so we have decided to highlight the matter through social media, Ram added.

Vide social media protest programme, from Saturday – March 4, 2017, the protesters will be shooting messages and videos on social media handles of several media organizations – newspapers, magazines, television news channels etc, not only in India, but globally, in next phase, the twitter handles and other social media handles of political leaders including the Chief Minister of State, Prime Minister of India, Industries Ministry etc will be flooded with mass messaging and video messages, Ram added.

This is probably the first of its kind novel protest in the nation and state stagged by the workers and contractors using social media networks and digital channels, to recover long pending dues from the company.

Shares of Reliance Defense ended in red zone on negative counters on the two leading Indian bourses – BSE and NSE, today, as the trading sessions for the week ended today.  It will be interesting to see how the investors and markets are reacting to the development on Monday when markets open for trading as the workers and contractors novel idea of protest using social media is expected to remain in full action over weekend.
