RAJKOT – After the World Health Organization (WHO) having officially declared Corona Virus as a Global Pandemic on March 11th, 2020, according to several reports, one-third population worldwide, is living under lockdown.

Several nations across the world have observed lockdown in one or the other form.

Let us first understand as to when the important advisories were issued by World Health Organization (WHO), before the Corona Virus Pandemic was “officially” declared as Global Pandemic and a matter of grave concern.

Which nations imposed measures to fight corona virus pandemic, in form of lockdowns, ban on assembly of people, quarantine measures, closures of day-to-day activities, ban on foreign travellers, locking of international borders etc etc.

There are 27 nations which have either imposed restrictions, clamped partial or nationwide lockdown and implemented quarantine measures to fight the Corona Virus Pandemic

  • On January 23rd, 2020 / CHINA imposed 6 weeks LOCKDOWN on Wuhan (the epicentre of corona virus pandemic), immediately after Wuhan China imposed lockdown across another 15 cities, and spanned its quarantine measures across 20 provinces.
  • On March 10th, 2020 / ITALY became the first nation to impose nationwide lockdown,  impacting 60 million (~6 Crore) citizens.
  • On March 11th, 2020 / DENMARK imposed 2 weeks nationwide lock, now extended upto April 13th, 2020, restricts assembly of 10 people, schools, restaurants, libraries shut.
  • On March 11th, 2020 / EL SALVADOR issued ORANGE ALERT, includes nationwide quarantine for 6.4 million (~64 lakh) citizens, bans gathering of 500 people, Salvador citizens travelling from Abroad to undergo compulsory 30 days quarantine, bars foreigners from entering the nation, schools closed for 3 weeks.

  • On March 12th, 2020 / NORWAY issued nationwide lockdown of 2 weeks, extended till April 12, 2020, schools, colleges, ports, airports, restaurants shut, essential services on, inbound travellers to Norway to quarantine.
  • On March 13th, 2020 / POLAND imposes LIMITATIONS to continue till April 11th, 2020, bans foreigners from entering Poland, shuts bars, casinos, seals international borders, inbound travellers to undergo compulsory quarantine for 14 days.
  • On March 13th, 2020 / KUWAIT issued nationwide lockdown for 2-weeks, commercial flights banned, prohibition on citizens from going to restaurants and gym, partial curfew imposed from 5pm to 4am.
  • On March 14th, 2020 / SPAIN imposed nationwide quarantine measures, imposed 15-days lockdown extended till April 12th, 2020, making impact on 47 million (~4.7 crore) residents, bars-restaurants-hotels closed, allows residents to come out of homes for work, medical appointments, bank work and buy essentials.

  • On March 15th, 2020 / KENYA closed schools, pubs, restaurants and does not allow non-residents to enter the nation.
  • On March 15th, 2020 / MOROCCO suspended international flights, closed international borders, schools, mosque, restaurants and government has arrested people for spreading FALSE / FAKE news related to Corona Virus.
  • On March 16th, 2020 / FRANCE imposed 15-days full lockdown, likely to be extended to six weeks, banned public gathering, shut non-essential businesses, issued public advisory to take public transit (if required) and only buy essential grocery.
  • On March 16th, 2020 / CZECH REPUBLIC imposed 10 days ban ordered closing schools, shops, restaurants, public events and banned foreign travel, allowed grocery stores, medical stores, banks, post-office, gas-stations and takeaway parcel restaurants to operate.

  • On March 16th, 2020 / MALAYSIA announced CLOSURE for two-weeks, extended now till April 14th, 2020  all non-essential business activities closed excluding banking, (equity) markets, healthcare, utilities and media, for two weeks, banned inbound and outbound travel, cancelled large gatherings and events.
  • On March 16th, 2020 / EUROPEAN UNION imposed ban on non-essential travel into the region (excluding UK) for 30 days.
  • On March 20th, 2020 / GERMANY announced FULL LOCKDOWN, shuts churches, sports facilities, bars, clubs, shops across 16 states. Bavaria, state in Germany went into full lockdown.
  • On March 17th, 2020 / BELGIUM imposed NATIONWIDE LOCKDOWN likely to last for 8 weeks, citizens asked to stay at home, limit contact, stores closed, Brussel Airlines suspended flights till April 19th, 2020, residents movements limited to essential visits to banks, medical stores, supermarkets, in case of emergency.

  • On March 19th, 2020 / ISRAEL imposed PARTIAL LOCKDOWN, banned foreigners from entering Israel, non-essential businesses closed, people asked to remain at home, go out if in case of essentials like buying food or medicine.
  • On March 21st, 2020 / ARGENTINA imposed PREVENTIVE & COMPULSORY lockdown till March 31st, 2020, citizens allowed to leave for essential services, police monitoring implemented.
  • On March 20th, 2020 / JORDAN has striked INDEFINITE LOCKDOWN, citizens not allowed to leave homes, people caught leaving their homes are subject to 1 year imprisonment, govenment deploys a system to make food and medicines available to citizens, restrictions have been
    eased, residents are allowed to go out for essential work.
  • On March 23rd, 2020 / AUSTRALIA imposed NATIONWIDE LOCKDOWN, shutting non-essential businesses, schools open but left to parents if they want their children to go to school, restricts assembly of more than 5 persons in a wedding and more than 10 persons in a funeral, entries to outsiders restricted within Australia.

  • On March 23rd, 2020 / UNITED KINGDOM (UK) entered into FULL LOCKDOWN mode, citizens allowed to leave homes for purchasing food & medicine, work, exercise etc, assembly of more than four people (barring funerals) banned, people asked to stay at home.
  • On March 24th, 2020 / IRELAND imposes RESTRICTIONS, schools-colleges-childcare facilities-cultural institutions closed, essential shops allowed to operate, restaurants & cafes to only operate for take-away food parcels, assembly of more than four not allowed.
  • On March 24th, 2020 / INDIA imposed NATIONWIDE FULL LOCKDOWN for 21 days (~3 weeks) which came into effect from March 25th, 2020 – Wednesday and will continue till April 14th, 2020 – Tuesday, 1.3 billion population of the nation told to social distance itself and stay at home.
  • On March 24th, 2020 / COLUMBIA kicked-off NATIONWIDE QUARANTINE, citizens about 70 years asked to stay at home till May 2020.

  • On March 25th, 2020 / SAUDI ARABIA imposed LOCKDOWN on two holy cities Mecca and Medina in RIYADH, suspended international flights, shut mosques, schools, restaurants and imposed 4 hours curfew, residents not allowed to move in or out from both cities.
  • On March 25th, 2020 / NEW ZEALAND imposed a month long NATIONWIDE LOCKDOWN, inbound travellers to undergo mandatory 14-days quarantine.
  • On March 26th, 2020 / SOUTH AFRICA imposed 21-days NATIONWIDE LOCKDOWN, essential businesses to remain open, cops and army monitoring the streets.
